Kun-Tan was one of the largest provinces in the Celestial Empire. Throughout history, it was home to many great sages—one of whom was a monkey named Xiao Li.
This great scholar could count flawlessly, write in multiple languages, and read the stars. Xiao Li lived in a magnificent pagoda, built with the wealth he earned through his invaluable knowledge.
A Stroll by the River
The sage often transcribed books for the nobility and sometimes wrote his own, sharing his theories and wisdom with anyone eager to learn. His fame spread throughout Kun-Tan, making him so well-known that even the gods took notice…One of them was Hong Zi, a celestial deity who descended from the heavens to meet this wellspring of wisdom. Hong Zi adored knowledge above all else—except perhaps bananas.
That evening, Xiao Li was strolling along the riverbank, enjoying the sunset. As a star fell from the sky, he remained fixated on the horizon. But this was no ordinary star—it was Hong Zi himself! The star crashed to the ground and transformed into an adorable panda, calling out for help.
When a God Disguised Himself as a Panda
Hearing the cries, Xiao Li hurried to investigate. Beyond the hills, he found a tiny panda cub—lost and completely out of place! Without hesitation, the sage took the little creature home.
He fed the panda and began asking questions. Hong Zi, delighted by the sage’s kindness, chose not to reveal his true identity. Instead, he wove a clever tale—a legend that fit together perfectly, leaving no room for doubt.
A Divine Artist
The panda asked if he could stay. Xiao Li agreed, and in gratitude, Hong Zi promised to teach him to paint like a god. He asked for a brush.
Xiao Li granted his request, and the speckled cub demonstrated several astonishing techniques. Before long, the sage’s paintings became breathtaking—so much so that his talent became unparalleled.
A Visit to the Imperial Court
Despite his disguise, Hong Zi continued to surprise Xiao Li with his wisdom, sharing knowledge freely. Yet, the sage couldn’t understand how this young panda knew so much about the world.
Meanwhile, word of Xiao Li’s brilliance spread across all of China. Even the Emperor invited him to the palace, eager to meet this living legend. As a reward for his vast intellect, the Emperor gifted him a massive diamond. Xiao Li mentioned his young apprentice, and the Emperor, intrigued, ordered that the panda be rewarded as well.
The Sacred Book of the Panda
Upon returning home, Xiao Li handed Hong Zi a chest filled with precious gems. After years in disguise, the god saw once more that his mentor was not only wise but pure of heart. At that moment, Hong Zi made a fateful decision: he would share divine knowledge never before known to mortals.
The panda wrote an entire sacred book—then vanished, leaving behind his priceless gift. Xiao Li became the wisest being to have ever walked the Earth. Some say that before his death, he transcended into another realm as a spirit… and only the gods know what happened next.
