For long millennia, Odin wandered among the worlds, acquiring new knowledge and power. At last, his strength began to wane. The great god found himself at a loss – would he never again absorb even a particle of knowledge?
This realization weighed heavily on Odin. He summoned his brothers, Vili and Ve, hoping that together they could find a way out of their predicament.
Let us create humanity!
The gods deliberated for a long time until one of them proposed creating humans in their own image and likeness – they would believe in Odin, Vili, and Ve, granting them new powers. Of course, it would be necessary to assist them by fulfilling various requests, but it would not be required to do so constantly. They could descend to the requests of mortals from time to time and extend help selectively. In this way, humans would maintain their faith, and the gods would not have to expend excessive energy to keep them satisfied.
Odin created Asgard for himself and his brothers, Midgard inhabited by humans, and Niflheim – the underworld ruled by Hel, the daughter of Loki. However, that is an entirely different story!
Runes for Every Occasion
When humans appeared in Midgard, the first wars began. Typically, the strongest prevailed, sometimes the cleverest, and almost never the wisest. Odin was displeased with the mortals’ disdain for those who sought knowledge.
The supreme ruler of Asgard bestowed upon them runes that helped solve most problems in both peaceful life and warfare, yet few understood them. Only the wise could grasp how the magical symbols of great Odin functioned. These individuals became masters of the runes.
Triumph of Wisdom and Knowledge
Soon, even the dimmest of Vikings recognized the importance of men who could wield Odin’s gift. A rune master could enchant weapons, armor, heal ailments, save from death, tame wild beasts, and perform many other feats that seemed impossible to an ordinary person.
The wise communicated directly with the gods. Odin and other patrons of Midgard provided rituals through which people could always call upon them and receive a response if their request was deemed worthy.
Fearless Warriors
Vikings engaged in endless wars. They trained rigorously with weapons and were formidable fighters who instilled fear in all the lands of what would become Europe. Additionally, the magical power of runes rendered them virtually invincible.
Vikings rarely utilized ranged weapons. They regarded bows and crossbows as tools for cowards; in their view, close combat was the domain of true warriors. Typically, Vikings fought with axes, hatchets, clubs, and hammers, occasionally wielding swords – a weapon undoubtedly convenient, yet largely ineffective against opponents clad in heavy iron armor. Such armor was also regarded by Vikings as the attire of the less courageous. Nonetheless, they donned certain elements of armor, for entering battle naked was foolish – something only berserkers and fools might attempt. The latter did not differ much from the former, as they lost their reason barely upon the onset of battle.
