All the living celebrate the Day of the Dead! Consuela holds this festival in special reverence, aware that sometimes the deceased truly come to pay a visit…
Shameless Relatives, Grief-Stricken
Consuela dreamed of an easy life! However, life had other plans. She toiled as a laundress while her mother spent her twilight years in retirement. The family lived in quite meager circumstances—what else can be said?
Consuela had attended many funerals. Each time, she witnessed money being placed directly in the coffin, and for wealthier individuals, gold was often tossed in, or even precious gemstones were discreetly slipped inside. Those shameless relatives—no one ever considers bestowing such riches upon the poor girl; instead, they prefer to bury it with the corpse, as if that were the proper thing to do!
Burglary in Broad Daylight Does Not Fly
One day, Consuela attempted to dig up the grave of a deceased man who had been very wealthy in life. Cemetery guards caught her, reprimanded her, and threatened to hit her over the head with a shovel if she dared intrude into the realm of the dead in such a despicable manner again. The grave robber was consigned to the police station and spent an entire week behind bars, reflecting on her actions.
Consuela only regretted that she had embarked on her endeavor in broad daylight. Next time, she intended to try her luck after midnight, when the cemetery guards were fast asleep or drinking mezcal and neglecting their duties.
A New Plan
Upon her release, Consuela reassured her mother, who was in a frenzy over her missing daughter. That very night, the cunning thief set off once more in search of a better life.
This time, she planned to rob another grave—one belonging to a wealthy gentleman. At the very least, he had owned a distillery in life, so his coffin would surely contain plenty of treasures.
So Much Gold!
Consuela unearthed the grave, pulling out a veritable trove of golden jewelry. Additionally, she discovered a substantial number of gold coins, enough to make numismatists fight—perhaps even to the death!
The enterprising beauty filled in the grave she had dug up and left the cemetery. She returned home without incident, choosing not to wake her mother, who was snoring like a seasoned caballero. She brought the acquired gold to her room, contemplating how to place it into good hands that would pay well.
Death as a Guest
That night, the cemetery keeper—a spirit resembling Death himself, but wielding a staff instead of a scythe—appeared in the grave robber’s room. Trembling with fear, Consuela justified her actions, but the spirit, of course, did not believe her. He commanded her to return the stolen gold to the deceased.
Consuela pleaded to keep at least a portion for herself to buy a lovely dress that would attract a suitable husband. She literally begged the spirit on her knees, and he took pity on her.
A Final Warning
The cemetery keeper instructed Consuela to perform a ritual that would grant him strength and explained what to do. The girl constructed an altar, placing pepper, lime, candles, and a shot of tequila upon it, then began to chant an incantation while shaking maracas.
The cemetery keeper softened. He promised to return the gold to the deceased himself and left a handful of gold coins for Consuela. Before flying out through the open window, the spirit warned that if the thief dared to trespass on anyone’s grave again, he would bury her there.
A Happy Ending
With a decent sum of gold, Consuela was able to purchase a fashionable wardrobe. She found a wonderful boyfriend and married him—no longer needing to work, and her mother was fully supported as well. Occasionally, she contemplated venturing into someone else’s grave, but she knew she must proceed with caution and never anger the cemetery keeper…
