Winsby had a knack for creating true masterpieces. His works frequently appeared at the most prestigious exhibitions and were regarded as examples to aspire to.
Gold and Diamonds
Winsby worked with precious metals and stones. He especially loved diamonds, which added luxury, elegance, and unparalleled brilliance to any piece of jewelry.
Naturally, the value of such items soared to astronomical heights. Sometimes, quite literally—only the truly affluent could afford something like that.
A Complex Challenge
Winsby had a hobby directly related to the craft that made him famous. He dreamed of creating a diamond with perfect facets! Such a gem could have replaced Julius Caesar’s diamond, through which he watched gladiatorial battles in the Colosseum due to his myopia. And if the stone were turned just so, the rays of sunlight passing through it would transform into a high-temperature laser. The appearance of the gem would be simply magnificent… ideally.
Winsby could not ascertain the necessary number of facets. He certainly knew that there needed to be more than four thousand. The diamond he was working on could well replace glasses, but transforming ultraviolet light into a laser remained elusive.
In Search of Inspiration
Winsby sought inspiration from a variety of sources, ranging from jewelry catalogs to museums. At times, he simply walked through city streets, hoping to see something extraordinary… and sometimes it worked.
One day, Winsby went for another stroll, pondering how to finish the faceting without losing a single particle of the expensive diamond for which he had paid a fortune out of his own pocket. By chance, the jeweler glanced into a nightclub, mistaking the establishment for a bar. The party was in full swing, making it a completely unsuitable place for contemplating lofty thoughts over a glass of single malt whiskey.
Fun Pills
Winsby had a drink and settled his tab. As he was about to leave, a peculiar man approached him, offering a remedy for his “long face.” The new acquaintance sold Winsby a couple of blue pills, suggesting they be taken right away, but the buyer waved off the persistent fellow and headed for the exit.
Wandering in Space
The master of jewelry craftsmanship could not quite figure out what to do with the diamond he had been working on for years. Once home, Winsby sat by the fireplace, intending to dive into his thoughts. However, the thought of the wonderful pills he had purchased at the club crossed his mind—why not give them a try and see if inspiration might strike…
Winsby chased down one pill with whiskey and began to wait. In a moment, the walls of the room parted, and he found himself in space, surrounded by shining stars and fruits floating in weightlessness. A little green man appeared before Winsby, holding a diamond with perfect facets! The jeweler carefully examined the tiny masterpiece and realized how to complete the work he had been trying to finish for so many years.
Return to Earth
Then Winsby was struck in the forehead by a horseshoe flying from another galaxy, and space transformed into an endless, empty darkness, devoid of stars, planets, or asteroids. The jeweler woke up, sitting in his chair. He felt an overwhelming thirst for at least a bucket of water. Moreover, he rejoiced quietly to himself because he had memorized the diamond he had seen in that strange vision.
