Gold Rush: The Beginning

In 1848, gold was discovered in California. The lucky finder was James Marshall, who worked at John Sutter’s mill.

The laborer stumbled upon a gold nugget that turned the lives of generations upside down. This affected not only Americans.

Towns of Fortune Hunters

A flood of emigrants from Europe and Asia surged into California, dreaming of finding a gold nugget the size of a house and shaking hands with John Rockefeller as business partners. However, the harsh reality often had little to do with such fantasies…

Entire towns sprang up around the supposed gold deposits. However, these were not built; rather, ships that had brought the emigrants to the North American coast were converted into buildings. In addition, tent camps were established, housing hundreds of people who came in search of a bag of fortune.

Fortunate and Unfortunate

In every town “built” by prospectors, there was always a saloon and a casino. Other establishments, shops, and workshops emerged in response to demand. Emigrants arrived alone and in families.

Many people sold everything they had, hoping to gain more abroad, but alas, most prospectors ended up with nothing or found only a few crumbs. Some lucky ones who managed to strike it rich in gold were quietly murdered.

Medical Miracles

In most of these towns, if not outright unsanitary conditions, there existed a highly fertile environment for the spread of typhus and other dangerous diseases. At times, prospectors died by the dozens, as the only link to the wonders of modern medicine was the doctor. And that physician could be inept, a charlatan, or a drunkard, meaning the chances of recovery for patients were extremely low.

Mr. Diggin Searches for Gold

None of these difficulties deterred the fortune seekers. Among them was Mr. Diggin—whose very name suggested he was destined to find gold or precious stones! This newcomer to the North American continent brought with him only personal belongings, savings, and a talking chicken with whom he had formed an incredibly close bond.

The old man took a cabin on one of the ships that had run aground—many in his situation, seeking quick wealth, were living there as well. In the evening, the prospector ventured into the saloon and politely asked the locals where the best place to start mining was. They suggested a couple of spots where about ten people were already working, but areas were still available.

The next day, Mr. Diggin bought a better pickaxe, a shovel, a lantern, and a helmet. Naturally, he also made arrangements for his chicken’s equipment. By noon, our hero arrived at the site, set up a tent, and began his work.

The Prospector Plows On!

Mr. Diggin worked tirelessly, putting his all into the task. The chicken worked alongside its owner, trying to help him strike it rich as quickly as possible. The little yellow fluffball longed to return to a calm, measured life, but try convincing an old fool determined to become a millionaire standing by a grave!
