Legends of the Golden City

As soon as Cortés returned to Spain, rumors about El Dorado began to spread throughout the country. Pragmatic minds spoke of a magnificent city constructed entirely of pure gold, while others, whose imaginations were inclined toward fantasy and the pursuit of chimera, contended that this place existed beyond the realm of our reality.

Adventurers took the quest for El Dorado seriously after a ship laden with gold arrived in Spain in 1533. This event served as the catalyst that transformed the myth into a genuine legend.

Who Built El Dorado 

Of course, the return of the conquistador Hernán Pizarro with a trove of gold also played a significant role in popularizing El Dorado. Following his exploits, every fortune seeker arriving in the New World sought the golden city.

Initially, the construction of El Dorado was attributed to the Incas; however, later historians and explorers expressed doubts, suggesting that the Aztecs and even the Mayans may have been involved in the creation of this golden paradise. Nonetheless, they could not substantiate their audacious theories beyond speculation.

What Historians Say 

Historian and geographer José de Acosta, who was also a member of the Jesuit order, frequently wrote about the attempts by conquistadors to discover the mysterious lands housing the golden city. Some, like Juan de Salinas, journeyed to distant lands at the behest of the king. The powerful elite sincerely believed in the existence of El Dorado and, naturally, yearned to find it; yet all their searches ended in failure.

However, this does not imply that the conquistadors returned empty-handed! They brought back a sea of treasures, which only fueled the aspirations of desperate individuals longing to amass wealth akin to the first European monarchs.

Two Centuries of Searching

The first to seek El Dorado was Sebastián de Belalcázar in 1535. Attempts to locate the golden city continued until the late 18th century—when a certain Rodríguez attempted to find it along the shores of modern-day Venezuela. Unsurprisingly, he discovered nothing, as no golden cities ever existed in that region of Latin America—only ordinary towns inhabited by regular people.

The Real Legend

It all began with a legend among the Chibcha tribe about El Dorado. Among their contemporary customs, it was a tradition for the chosen one to be coated in gold dust and then immerse themselves in a body of water to receive the blessings of the gods.

At the conclusion of the ritual, the individual would leave behind treasures. Perhaps the city where these rituals took place was not golden, but the lake where the chosen ones offered their tributes could indeed be considered such, given the wealth resting at its bottom.

Of course, the legendary location was sought after as well. Initially, adventurers suspected Lake Guatavitá, which they scoured both thoroughly and obsessively. Alas, for the desperate divers, they found no ingots, nuggets, or anything crafted from gold.
