The Sage Who Helped People
Many years ago, in the province of Tun Kan, there lived a wise man named Fa Cai. Every day he read books, acquiring new knowledge. Fa Cai also helped people who came to him seeking assistance. Sometimes they even brought their animals, knowing that the sage would never turn anyone away.
Fa Cai was well-versed in medicine, so the path leading to his home was never overgrown. Moreover, year by year, it resembled a well-trodden road even more. It was only a matter of time before the path would be paved with stones.
Pay What You Wish…
Despite his fame, Fa Cai lived quite modestly. He never asked for money in exchange for help but encouraged people to leave donations in order to be rewarded for his labor and not to offend the gods with greed.
This was rather a reckless decision! As is often the case, most people are not inclined to thank those who have done them a good deed. The donations left by those who received help from Fa Cai were quite modest.
An Unexpected Guest
One day, a little bird flew into the sage’s house, astonishing him with its ability to speak! It chirped that it had been sent by the dragon Zi Dao, under whose patronage the province of Tun Kan had flourished for many years. The bird asked the sage for help and urged him to embark on his journey as soon as possible.
Naturally, Fa Cai agreed. He simply could not refuse! The bird then happily told him how to find the dwelling of Zi Dao. Fa Cai memorized the route, and the unexpected guest that had appeared in his home flew away through the open window.
A Difficult Journey
The next morning, the sage set off. The road to the dragon’s abode lay through mountains and stretched to the very peaks of the clouds. Fa Cai took with him a supply of food, water, and herbs, knowing they would surely come in handy.
The journey took two days. Wandering among the mountains, Fa Cai began to think he was lost; however, there was no turning back—he had to continue until he reached the gates of the dragon’s castle.
What a Surprise…
The sage entered, expecting to see a majestic master. Instead, he was greeted by the very bird that had brought news of Zi Dao’s illness. It turned out that she was the dragon…
The “bird” attempted to cast a magical transformation spell but sneezed during the reading and pronounced several words incorrectly. And so, everything went awry. The dragon, transformed into a bird, pleaded with Fa Cai to reverse the spell. Of course, the sage agreed to help, maintaining a serious demeanor, though he secretly allowed himself to chuckle at the unfortunate misunderstanding that had befallen the great Zi Dao.
The Dragon’s Gratitude
Fa Cai prepared a potion, which the “bird” drank to the last drop. Immediately, she transformed into a colossal dragon, who tirelessly thanked her savior! Zi Dao gifted him a green magical ring that was meant to help Fa Cai escape poverty—thanks to the magical power it bestowed, the sage could now turn anything he wished into gold. Furthermore, the dragon handed him a basket of wealth—a highly useful artifact capable of lifting anyone from destitution!
Upon returning home, Fa Cai transformed a money tree into a golden one, touched souvenir coins, and caught a fish swimming in the pond near his house—the ring worked flawlessly! Finally, the sage received the wealth he deserved more than anyone else.
