You could spend decades hunting and see it all! Except, perhaps, for the mighty fiery beast…
Welcome to the Hunt
Bill had spent many years hunting in the prairies, shooting bison and various smaller game. It was a good way to make a living. The hunter earned enough to get by, but he wanted more. One day, an idea to lead groups of eager hunters into the prairies came across his mind – surely there would be plenty of people among city folks who would want to feel like real cowboys, firing hefty guns!
But unfortunately for these dreamers, such a stunt wouldn’t fly in the city – the cops would show up and arrest the shooter immediately. It’s a much better idea to shoot guns in the prairies, where no one will interfere.
No Bullfighting!
Bill wasn’t too worried about safety. And rightly so, what’s so dangerous about the prairies? Maybe a pack of hungry coyotes can sneak up on you, but a single gunshot would send them running. And bison – generally harmless creatures, unless, of course, you tease them with a red rag. One of Bill’s clients once decided to pretend to be matador and started waving a red shirt! Either he didn’t have a drop of bullfighting blood in him, or that bison was just particularly nasty… in any case, it could have ended badly if another shooter hadn’t stopped the enraged bull with a well placed bullet.
Tall Tales and Fairy Tales
Bill fueled people’s interest in hunting with a legend about the king of the prairies – the fiery bison. He regaled everyone with tales of a massive beast whose hide was made of pure fire. Naturally, such a specimen would be a priceless find! Collectors who buy rare creatures would pay millions for it!
The story about the bison was dubious at best. Who would believe a tale about a beast that, out of hunger, swallowed a gold nugget found in the middle of nowhere? Allegedly, it was part of a cursed treasure belonging to a shaman of an Indian tribe, and thus ancient magic turned a tonne and a half of beef into a fiery demon…
Back to the Hunt
It’s likely Bill had more than just alcohol when he came up with this fantastic legend. Most people who heard his tale smiled or openly laughed, not believing a word the hunter said. However, he didn’t care, as long as they came and paid.
One fine day, a group of people had approached Bill wanting to shoot some wildlife. Of course, he agreed. The hunter took the city folks to the prairie, intending to find a herd of bison or something else relatively harmless and suitable as a trophy.
The Appearance of the Prairie King
After a while, Bill heard a noise that everyone else soon heard too – it seemed like a herd of animals was stampeding in panic, fleeing from what could only be the end of the world! Soon, the hunters saw the animals that lived in the area running, followed by a fiery bison that looked like some mythical creature. The massive beast galloped, breathing fire from its nostrils, and roared loudly, scaring everyone who heard it. It seemed to be having fun.
Bill ordered everyone to head back to safety, and they joined the panicked retreat. He also thought that something must have been mixed into the whiskey he was drinking. Bill rode without looking back all the way home. He told the others to leave because the hunt was over. The guys were more than happy to get out of the strange place where fiery bulls roamed.
