What to do if you are a king who has squandered the royal treasury? Simply take a page from the playbook of His Majesty Trulieu – make the court wizard to cultivate special flowers!
A shortage of gold and a revolution looming.
King Trulieu was a notorious overspender! He hosted balls no less than twice a week, along with feasts and social events where he became the centre of attention. Such indulgences came at an exorbitant cost. Gold flowed from the treasury like a river… and the precious gems dwindled in number, while Trulieu found himself unable to curb his appetites.
The Minister of Finance warned the king of the impending collapse. He stated that if this continued, the king would have to borrow from his subjects. Who knows if the noble lords would lend his majesty the necessary funds? If they refused, it would lead to the proclamation of the crown’s bankruptcy! Such a turn of events would bring revolution perilously close, often resulting in being imprisoned for life or execution in the town square for the reigning monarchs.
Successful War
Trulieu was horrified by the future that the Minister of Finance had described! He stopped his endless parties and, for the first time in many years of his reign, thought about how to bring the rivers of gold back into the treasury.
The king introduced several new taxes for the nobles and craftsmen, but he didn’t push too hard, listening to the wise Minister of Finance who warned that a revolution could start quickly if he went overboard. Later, the king launched a successful campaign that filled the treasury at an incredible pace. However, trouble arose again—Trulieu began to party once more, like a young knight who had inherited a truly amazing fortune from his late parents. It’s easy to figure out that the balance of the treasury was once again headed towards the negative…
The Ingenious Rickus
The king summoned wizards and alchemists. Stamping his foot, he demanded that his subjects quickly master the art of creating gold, or at the very least, silver. Alas, they could only raise their hands in helplessness, explaining to His Majesty the limitations of science and magic in matters of finance.
However, the wizard Rickus, once engaged in alchemy and horticulture, was in no hurry to dishearten the king. Moreover, he informed him of a certain project that, although requiring significant investment, held great potential. After listening to Rikus, the delighted Trulieu commanded the others to leave, while instructing the unrecognized genius to remain in the throne room for a detailed discussion.
Expensive Flowers
Thus, in the Cambrian Mountains, located in the western part of the kingdom, magical flowers came into existence. Their unopened buds grew precious gems and gold. Undoubtedly, cultivating them was an exceedingly costly endeavour; however, it was well worth the expense.
The flowers required irrigation with a nourishing mixture blended with crystalline powder. King Trulieu wept at the sight of artisans in the palace forge crushing emeralds, sapphires, topazes, and other gemstones that were worth an exorbitant amount of money.
Time to Think About Security
The magical plants grew at an exceedingly slow pace. In fact, only one had borne fruit thus far, which Rickus affectionately referred to as the firstborn.
Meanwhile, more and more flowers were being planted. The king ordered a watch to be stationed around the experimental valley in the Cambrian Mountains, ensuring that no curious onlookers would intrude upon the place where the bounty of the kingdom’s foremost individual was ripening.
