A Gardener from God

Louis poured his soul into his garden in the most literal sense! The lonely old man had little to occupy his time in retirement, so he dedicated all his free hours to flowers, shrubs, and trees. And the amount of berries ripening in Louis’s garden was nothing short of a marvel!

Every year, the old man treated his relatives to homemade jams and preserves, without even asking if they liked sweets or perhaps had vowed war on sugar in pursuit of a slender figure. As the saying goes, “Take it all!”

Simply Beautiful 

Louis’s garden looked absolutely magnificent. One day, someone suggested he photograph his handiwork and send it to National Geographic. Well, the old man did just that. Louis sent his photos to several magazines, including that very “monster” his acquaintance had mentioned.

Of course, National Geographic rejected him, but lesser-known publications welcomed the submission warmly. The photo was published, and Louis was filled with indescribable delight!

A Friend from the World of Science

Certainly, the owner had invested a great deal of money in his creation. He purchased expensive fertilizers, top-quality seedlings and seeds, and, of course, worked tirelessly. Louis also understood that there is no limit to perfection, so he was willing to do anything for endless evolution…

One day, Louis attended a relative’s anniversary celebration. There he met a guy who had worked for many years in a government laboratory. However, the scientist was now enjoying the tranquility of retirement. In truth, he was languishing from idleness, so he set up some research at home by creating a makeshift laboratory in his basement, similar to the one he had at work.

Underappreciated Work 

The scientist’s name was Mike. Louis remembered it just as well as his own! Mike was working on various genetic materials that could change the world for the better. At least, that’s what he thought.

But at the institute, where Mike had dedicated over forty years of his life, no one wanted to hear about special materials—who cared what some half-crazed old man was synthesizing while bored in retirement?! Probably no one, except for another similarly passionate fan of the craft…

Science and Gardening

And Louis was just that kind of guy! The owner of the beautiful garden inquired with Mike if he had any materials in his collection that would benefit plants. Naturally, the scientist had something to offer. However, he hadn’t conducted any experiments as he was utterly indifferent to gardening himself, growing only the lawn in front of his house, which he regularly mowed.

After the celebration, Louis visited his new friend. They shared a drink of whiskey while engaging in pleasant conversation about various topics, and then Mike showed Louis his laboratory. There, he handed over a powdery material to be added to the fertilizers. Louis promised to test this substance in action.

Square Berries

Less than a week passed before the gardener “treated” his berry bushes with the high-tech fertilizer. He watered them regularly, eager to share the results with Mike.

Louis was astonished one fine day to see not little berries, but huge square ones made up of numerous smaller ones! The effect was uniform across all the bushes, except for the strawberries, which became square and enormous but otherwise remained unchanged.

The Trials… Nearly Concluded

The jam made from the scientifically grown berries turned out to be even tastier! All of Louis’s relatives appreciated the exquisite treat, marveling at the peculiarities of the new variety. In a few years, it will be possible to judge how safe Mike’s genetic materials are for people…
