The Story Behind
Hera has always despised Zeus’s lovers! And now she has decided to deal with all those women who disrupt her happy marriage…
Mortal Lovers
Hera lived with Zeus for what felt like an eternity, happily and contentedly! She was one of the most beautiful goddesses, and even among mortal women, few could rival her.
Nevertheless, such beauties occasionally emerged. Just think of Alcmena, who bore the cursed Heracles…
The Magic Mirror
For the first time in her life, Hera sought assistance from Hephaestus, requesting him to forge a mirror that would reveal her rivals. The god of craftsmanship created an astonishing artifact! Whenever Hera asked to see the lady who had captivated Zeus, even if against her will, she could see her rival in the mirror.
The jealous wife eliminated all the beauties her husband laid eyes upon. Oh, how many mortal women lost their lives due to the enchanted mirror, at which Hera would often spend hours gazing!
The Immortal Competitor
One day, the goddess of authority once again asked the mirror to show her the latest lover of Zeus, with whom he had taken up an affair. To Hera’s astonishment, the artifact revealed Aphrodite! She nearly burst with anger…
Aphrodite, above all, is a goddess who cannot simply be thrown into the abyss, drowned in the ocean, poisoned, stabbed with a dagger, or starved to death. The cunning creature is immortal; may it all fall to Hades! But this did not deter Hera – she devised a clever and treacherous plan to permanently divert Zeus’s attention from Aphrodite.
Go fetch the bracelet!
One day, there was a knock at the door of the most beautiful goddess of Olympus. Aphrodite opened the door to find Hermes on her doorstep. The messenger of the gods conveyed Hera’s directive – to go to Hephaestus for the bracelet he was to forge for Zeus.
Aphrodite was puzzled as to why she had been assigned this errand, but she could not defy the will of the chief goddess. Following her, invisible spirits set out for the forge to carry out the decisive part of the nefarious plan.
Zeus’s Fury
Aphrodite arrived at the forge and requested the bracelet. Meanwhile, Hephaestus had no idea which ornament she was speaking of. At that very moment, the spirits shoved Aphrodite into a pile of coal! Then Hephaestus helped her up, grabbing her with his dirty, sweaty hands…
Upset and soiled, Aphrodite hurried to Hera. At that moment, Zeus was present, having been “invited” by his beloved wife. Upon seeing the marks of the craftsman’s hands, coal, and soot on her white dress, the Thunderer flew into a rage, deducing who had touched the most beautiful goddess of Olympus!
A Millennia-long Sentence
Aphrodite attempted to explain everything, blaming Hera, who had deceitfully lured her to the forge. Hera merely shrugged, pretending she had no involvement whatsoever. The ruler of Olympus ordered Aphrodite to leave his sight and departed from Hera, intending to find Hephaestus and teach him a lesson.
Zeus bound his son with enormous chains. Hephaestus was bewildered by the events and tried to appeal to his father’s reason, but Zeus wanted to hear none of it. The Thunderer sentenced his son to a thousand years of confinement in the forge with no right to leave its bounds. In fact, Hephaestus, despite his wishes, could not escape his workplace, as breaking the chains created by Zeus’s magic proved utterly impossible.
Treasure of the Enslaved Craftsman
Now, the patron of craftsmanship had nothing but his beloved work! Sometimes out of boredom, Hephaestus forged gold coins and polished gemstones, resulting in a workshop brimming with treasures. You can peek into the forge of the gods right now – who knows, you might get lucky and strike it rich!
