The Story Behind
The pigs have a preference for diverse food. Piglet Porky became weary of the same old fare, so he set off in search of happiness in the forest!
A Sparse Menu and a Pig’s Life
Old Norman kept an entire herd of pigs, feeding them anything and everything, reasoning that the owners of the most luxurious snouts could devour it all. To some extent, he was right. However, it is rather foolish to think that pigs have no culinary preferences at all.
Norman fed the pigs specialized feed, vegetables, and occasionally treated them to some overripe apples. The pink piglets rejoiced when their owner offered them something other than the tiresome compound feed. Porky, in particular, was the happiest, squealing in sheer delight! The others looked on, finishing their meals, concerned that their ecstatic companion might choke on his joy.
The Strike Failed
One fine day, Porky grew tired of the monotonous menu. The plump pink piglet decided to stage a “strike”! He settled himself in the middle of the pen with a bucket, looking questioningly at his owner who was bustling about with his chores.
Eventually, Norman nearly tripped over Porky and almost fell—at which point, the protesting piglet received quite a kick! After being booted, Porky moved his protest a bit farther away, hoping to avoid further misunderstandings with his owner.
In Search of Tasty Food
The strike did not yield results. Norman continued to feed the pink piglets the same food, seemingly unwilling to introduce any variety into their meals. Thus, Porky decided to take matters into his own hooves! Of course, in a figurative sense, since Norman didn’t keep any livestock besides pigs.
One morning, Porky poked his nose into the trough filled with the detested compound feed, hoping not to vomit. He stuffed himself with as much food as he could and then went for a stroll, waving a hoof at the other pigs who were curious about where the hero of the strike was headed, having been left with a sore rear.
A Deceitful Liar!
In truth, Porky ventured into the nearby forest. Norman had warned his charges many times to stay away from it. He explained to the pigs one simple truth—that nothing good awaited them there, only troubles lurking behind practically every tree…
Porky couldn’t care less about his owner’s words. The piglet set off into the woods, whistling his favorite tune. As he looked around, he saw no dangers. Furthermore, Porky found mushrooms, berries, and acorns, which he devoured with delight. It turned out that old fool Norman had deceived them; the forest was wonderful after all!
And to hell with those swine…
Porky hurried back to the pigsty to tell the others about the delightful food he had discovered in the woods and how their owner was a deceitful trickster. Sadly, no one believed him.
Porky spat, deciding it was pointless to cast pearls before swine. He continued to wander into the forest each day, gorging himself on everything within reach of his snout.
And there he was!
One day, while meandering through the woods, Porky stumbled upon a wild apple tree. The piglet dashed toward the trunk, eager to indulge! Apples fell in abundance. Porky sat there munching away, snorting in pleasure. When he was left with just one apple, he heard rustling in the bushes…
Turning around, Porky spotted a fox eyeing him hungrily, licking its lips and sharpening its teeth against a forked stick. The sly orange creature planned to snack on the well-fed pig, but Porky had no intention of becoming its lunch!
It seemed the owner wasn’t lying after all…
Porky sprinted home with all his might. It seemed that only the pig god helped him run faster than the wind. Perhaps he even tripped the fox, which managed to stumble twice and consequently fell far behind its fleeing “meal.” Fortunately, Porky escaped from his pursuer; the fox did not dare venture out of the woods, much less into the farm, for old Norman might greet it with a blast from his gun.
