An Almost Unscientific Theory
Axel proposed a bold theory that the poles of planet Earth had shifted many times, and this happened almost chaotically. Science recognizes only one Ice Age, but the daring scientist decided to make his own corrections to the well-known postulates used by historians and paleontologists.
According to Axel, similar periods occurred repeatedly where the tropics are now located. His colleagues asked him to justify this bold theory, but the scientist could only provide indirect evidence and a sea of guesses.
No Money, Not a Single Dollar!
Moreover, Axel calculated the coordinates for excavation — he was insanely eager to reach traces of animals that inhabited the planet during the penultimate Ice Age!
And, of course, money was needed to bring these grand plans to life. Axel asked the Institute of Paleontology to fund the science project, but the leadership at the top categorically refused to sponsor projects they considered doubtful, even politely.
Glory to the White Master!
The scientist had no choice but to endure mockery from colleagues or really shake up his bank account. Partly lucky, Axel found that the site for excavation was in Central America, where for just one dollar locals could be persuaded to do almost anything. At worst, for two or three dollars.
Axel took a vacation and went to work, strange as that sounds. Arriving there, he quickly assembled a team led by engineers experienced in conducting earthworks of varying complexity. Most of the budget went toward their maintenance and explosives. Local labor was unusually cheap — sometimes Axel felt embarrassed paying so little! However, the workers considered the money quite decent and sincerely thanked the “white master.”
Where Are You, Great Discovery?!
Explosives were used by the ton. Work went on around the clock. The budget steadily ran out.
Axel realized that if things continued like this, he risked becoming poor. He urgently needed to make a world-class discovery that would pay back the solid investments, bring worldwide fame, and generally help science to advance far ahead.
What a find…
A whole month passed. Early one morning, one of the foremen ran to Axel with news of a very interesting discovery that he should see personally—and as soon as possible. He led the “white master” into a mine that seemed to lead to the center of the Earth.
There, at the very bottom, Axel saw an ice room where dozens of animals were preserved! All these creatures that lived on the planet in prehistoric times were frozen. It seemed nature itself decided to preserve the unique fauna for descendants.

All kinds of beings were there! Axel saw dinosaurs and very unusual creatures like a fish with a sheep’s head crowned with huge horns.
The room was warm, yet the ice did not melt. Perhaps some special magic was at work…

In any case, the superstitious workers refuse to dig deeper and prefer to stay away from the frozen animals that lived on our planet who knows how many years ago. Now Axel will have to arm himself with a pickaxe and shovel! Good thing there are at least explosives…
