Jack sold a cow for a handful of beans and earned every curse his mother could muster. Yet, in time, the boy helped her amass a fortune! Embark on this renowned fairy tale and may luck be on your side!
The Little Fool
A boy named Jack lived with his mother in modest means. When circumstances grew dire, they were forced to sell their cow, especially since it had ceased to give milk. Jack’s mother instructed him to take the beast to the market to fetch the highest price possible.
Along the way, Jack encountered an old man. A peculiar fellow, he offered to buy the cow for a handful of magical beans. The boy consented and handed over the animal. Returning home, Jack dismayed his mother with such a foolish decision.
Welcome to the Heavens!
A furious mother sent her son to bed without supper. She threw the beans out the window, questioning their worth aloud.
At dawn, Jack awoke to behold a colossal beanstalk stretching beyond the clouds through the window. Without hesitation, he took to climbing. Soon, he found himself in a realm above the skies…
Jack strolled along the path, whistling his favorite tune. Along the way, he came upon a house inhabited by a giantess. The mistress urged him to leave before her husband returned, for he had a penchant for human flesh.
The Cunning Thief
Just as Jack was preparing to leave, footsteps echoed at the doorstep. The giantess concealed the boy, urging him to remain silent. Her husband detected no uninvited guest, though the scent of human flesh teased his nostrils.
Jack slipped away from the giants’ home, clutching a sack of gold. Upon his return, he handed the treasure to his mother, who was overjoyed beyond measure.
Return to the Cloud Kingdom
Time passed—days, weeks, months alike. The riches Jack seized in the cloud kingdom were nearly depleted. The boy knew poverty would soon revisit them, forcing him and his mother back into their bleak existence.
Jack ascended the enormous beanstalk once more, hoping to procure something valuable, perhaps another bag of gold. He ventured again to the fateful house, intent on acquiring wealth. The giantess recognized him and implored him to leave before her husband’s return.
The Incorrigible Thief
Alas, Jack failed to flee in time. He concealed himself within the henhouse and found there a hen that laid golden eggs. The little rogue waited until the giant fell asleep, then seized the hen and hurried toward the beanstalk.
Skillfully descending, the boy delivered the hen to his mother. Now possessing a perpetual source of gold, they could forever banish poverty from their lives!
Seeking Adventure — and Trouble
Life flowed on without change. One fine day, Jack grew restless and clambered once more into the cloud kingdom, eager to find something novel.
He revisited the familiar home. Unfortunately, the giant had returned; his wife hid Jack in a cauldron, ordering him to stay silent. The enraged master searched long for the intruder but failed to glance into the vast iron vessel.
An Unexpected Twist
The giant played a speaking harp before retiring to bed. The instant Jack heard the snoring, he emerged from the cauldron and, before fleeing, snatched the harp. Alas, the instrument was sentient!
Jack dashed outside, fearful of waking the giant. Yet the harp lamented so loudly that even the dead would have risen! The boy sprinted toward the beanstalk, and the giant pursued him as swiftly as he could, stumbling and falling.
The Monster’s Demise and a Happy Ending
Jack managed to descend the beanstalk and dash to the barn for an axe while the giant clambered down. The boy chopped the stalk, and the giant plummeted to his death. From that day forward, Jack vowed never to ascend into the cloud kingdom again, for moderation is a virtue!
