From Europe With Love

In the beginning of 19th century, an enterprising fellow departed the European continent and voyaged to America. This man was Charles Fey, a master of mechanics with dreams of amassing great wealth.

Naturally, Charles spared no effort in his quest to join the ranks of millionaires: in 1825, the ingenious mechanic unveiled his first slot machine to the public, named the “Liberty Bell.” Indeed, this invention became the progenitor of all “one-armed bandits,” which have since undergone significant evolution.

Behold the Very First Slot Machine!

The “Liberty Bell” was as straightforward as a penny! The machine featured just three reels and a single payline. Winning combinations were formed from game symbols: horseshoes, hearts, spades, card suits of spades, and bells.

Landing three of the latter symbols on the payline rewarded the player with fifty cents. Naturally, notions of wilds, scatters, bonuses, and other delights of the modern gambler were yet unknown — these innovations would only emerge decades later.

Everyone Loves Slots

The slot machine proved to be an excellent advertisement for any drinking establishment. As soon as locals heard that a “one-armed bandit” was available in the venue, an endless stream of patrons would flock in.

Many came to play not just for the sake of drinking, but after a few spins, they would order something—either to celebrate a win or to drown their disappointment from a loss. Onlookers watching the action at the machine also bought spirits, which made it much more enjoyable to watch the spinning reels and observe others’ reactions.

Enough Playing Around.

Slot machines brought enormous profits to the establishment owners! However, the golden rivers of cash flowed past the Inland Revenue Service, which could only grind its teeth in frustration.

One fine day, the disgruntled officials reached out to the government, demanding a ban on gambling. Unfortunately, owners of drinking venues across the country were forced to remove the machines from their premises. Some kept them in special rooms—accessible only to “insiders.” But sooner or later, lawbreakers were caught, with all the ensuing consequences.

A Little Trick.

In 1910, Mortimer Mills devised a way to bypass the slot machine ban—by disguising them as gum vending machines! The customer would insert a coin into a special slot to receive a piece of chewing gum, and then had the opportunity to test their luck in a bonus game by pulling a handle.

If three identical symbols appeared on the payline, the machine would dispense a reward. The reels of these disguised slot machines featured images of fruits, berries, and other harmless items—more associated with chewing gum than gambling entertainment.

Classics Will live on fore

Juicy Win and similar slots serve as a nostalgic homage to the bygone era when the slot industry was operating under severe restrictions. Despite bans, limitations, and various forms of suppression, these machines stand among the most popular forms of entertainment worldwide. Naturally, gameplay in contemporary slots is far more diverse and sophisticated.

Yet, for those who wish to experience the authentic classic that started it all, give it a try — perhaps luck will be on your side! Moreover, modern interpretations of these classics often incorporate various features designed to enhance players’ chances of winning.
