The Ideal Viking

Olaf was one of the most renowned Vikings in his settlement! A fine fellow, a brave warrior, a diligent farmer, and who else? Ah yes, the husband of a beautiful woman who could captivate any man with her looks!

Olaf traveled extensively and fought bravely. He had encountered humans, monsters, the undead, and magical beings created by sorcery. The valiant warrior won hundreds of battles and was never seriously wounded. As for the scars that distinguished a warrior, Olaf hardly cared—they were mere annoyances to him, especially since he healed as quickly as a dog.

A Tablecloth is Costly, Foolish Woman…

One day, our hero returned from a long voyage. Stepping ashore, he hurried home, eager to see his wife. However, his beloved did not share his enthusiasm. Moreover, she presented Olaf with a rather unpleasant surprise…

His wife demanded a divorce! She told Olaf that her feelings had faded, she was tired of waiting for her wanderer, and she was leaving for another Viking who was wealthier. Slamming the door, his wife departed.

Trouble Never Comes Alone

A couple of days later, his ex-wife filed for divorce, leaving the elders of the settlement with no choice but to approve her wish. Olaf became an absolutely free Viking, but that was only half of the misfortune that the gods would help the abandoned husband endure. According to ancestral laws, in the case of divorce, the wife could take everything the ex-husband owned, except for the house.

Olaf lost his livestock, gold, precious jewels, and exotic rarities he had brought from distant lands. Fortunately, his ex-wife left him at least his armor and weapons, which, in her foolish opinion, were of no use whatsoever. Luckily, the shameless witch did not find the small bundle of gold that Olaf had hidden under the floorboards! Just in case. Apparently, that’s what saved him…

What a Surprise!

For several days, Olaf sat in a nearby tavern, drowning his sorrows with everything that could burn. Finally, he decided to abandon it all and take up farming. Besides, the new wife that Olaf would surely find would always be watched over, meaning she wouldn’t go anywhere, and her cute little head wouldn’t entertain any naughty thoughts of fooling around with someone else.

Completely sobered up, the Viking headed to the market. There, he bought seeds, seedlings, and livestock. Olaf had enough money for a small flock of chickens and a huge boar. As soon as he locked the boar in the pen, it surprised him by speaking like a human…

The Land of Wizards

It turned out that the boar lived in a realm of wizards who perished due to a failed magical experiment. Only talking animals and heaps of treasures remained in the sanctuaries.

The boar longed to return home—fate had led it astray and into a trap! After all, hunters had sold it, and then its owner had resold it.

A Journey for Treasure

All this time, the boar had stayed silent to avoid trouble. Olaf listened to its tale and agreed to help it get home; at the same time, he planned to rob a couple of sanctuaries. After all, the wizards were dead, and their treasures were going to waste. They might as well serve the glorious Viking!
