As the years passed, the emperor aged. The great Sigamoto’s mind weakened, and he began to rely on his advisors, though previously he had governed the nation with remarkable strength and clarity.
Palace Rats
Cunning palace lackeys quickly sensed the change and decided to exploit the situation. The advisors deceived the emperor, coercing him into passing laws that harmed the country.
A golden era dawned for the nobility, while the common folk suffered under oppressive taxation. Moreover, the advisors attempted to wage war on neighboring lands, yet their assault utterly failed, resulting in devastating losses.
Hope of the Empire
Japan was literally cracking at its seams, threatening to dissolve from a unified stronghold into dozens of warring principalities. Meanwhile, the treacherous advisors continued to line their own pockets unabated.

Fortunately for the princess, a guardian appeared: a samurai named Kiusu, who seemed to materialize out of nowhere as assassins closed in on the emperor’s daughter. The valiant warrior slew two attackers and wounded a third, taking him captive to uncover the mastermind behind the plot.
That very night, the emperor ordered the execution of four ministers. It seemed that the princess had succeeded in eradicating the vile villains exploiting the emperor’s age and frailty. But the story was far from over…
One restless night, unable to sleep, the princess wandered through the palace and glanced into the treasury to see how much gold her father still possessed.
The Cursed Thief!
Upon entering, Sakura caught sight of a thief hastily stuffing priceless relics, gathered by her father from every corner of the world, into a sack. The vile intruder dared to covet sacred coins, statues of divine dragons, and many other artifacts. Curiously, neither gold nor jewels seemed to interest this nocturnal visitor, who had brazenly entered the treasury uninvited.
Luckily, Kiusu was nearby once again. The samurai dispatched the thief with a rapid flurry of strikes! It appeared the treasure pilferer died before fully comprehending his fate. His misfortune was hardly our concern.
Assistant to Princess Sakura
The princess appointed Kiusu as her personal bodyguard, and the emperor rewarded him with a hefty chest of gold.
